Less than a decade ago the diagnostic criteria for detecting decay consisted of a visual exam, probing a tooth with an explorer or evaluation a traditional x-ray. Now with the latest of technology, we can use this "magic wand" for earlier caries detection. Laser detection is especially valuable for adult patients with deep dark stains in their tooth enamel. The DIAGNOdent uses a specialized laser tip on the tooth surface to detect decay (demineralized tooth substances and bacteria byproducts). Along with the accuracy rate which is over 90%, we can choose the most ideal restorative intervention to maximize the structural integrity and preserve the involved teeth.
